Winnipeg Alpine Racers Ski Club prepares for another great season of racing fun.
Winnipeg, Manitoba February 2011
As strange as it may sound, downhill skiing, including Alpine and SkierX, is alive and well right here in Winnipeg. The Winnipeg Alpine Racers Ski Club trains at Springhill twice a week and races around the province throughout the ski season.
Coach Kendra Gierys, who was selected by Sport Manitoba to receive a Women to Watch grant, says “When you think of Manitoba your first thought usually isn’t downhill skiing, but we were the first ski club in the province and have been very successful over the years. We have won the overall Manitoba team title 13 out of the last 16 years. Last year Bryant Roulston and Tara Campbell were both been selected for the 2011 Canada Winter games and Alexis Varkonyi was an alternate.”
But this club is not all business. They focus on family fun and developing a life long love of downhill skiing. Skiing is a sport that the whole family can enjoy together. With a little training, people from 2 to 82 can enjoy getting out on the slopes for some exercise and fresh air.
Ski Mom, Jodie Smith says “Our whole family started skiing at the same time. One lesson and we were hooked. A day at the ski hill is a great opportunity for real quality time together. We have lots of great conversations on the chair lift.”
Winnipeg Alpine Racers offers both traditional, Alpine Ski training and, for the first time this year, SkierX which gives the racers a chance to go “freestyle”, racing over jumps, banks , rollers and more!
