Bottineau Snow Stars Festival/Kombi Race
Bottineau Winter Park, North Dakota
February 8-9th, 2014
WAR families enjoyed a fabulous weekend with two days of activities on Feb. 8-9th at Bottineau Winter Park. The drive to Bottineau was awesome this year with clear roads and no blowing snow! Everyone was in for a surprise when they arrived and entered the beautiful new Annie’s House Chalet. Annie’ House is a spacious new chalet with fireplace and large screen TV (on which visitors were able to watch the exciting events of the Sochi Winter Olympics), a fabulous cafeteria (loved the tacos in a bag!) and tall soaring windows. It allowed everyone who didn’t want to brave the extreme cold that weekend to watch the activities from inside.
Teams participating this year included teams from Manitoba: Asessippi, La Riviere, Summit and WAR from Winnipeg, Westman from Brandon, as well as our hosting team from Bottineau, North Dakota.
On Saturday Snowstars Festival athletes participated in skills stations including a speed run and a skills course. All the participants seemed to really enjoy themselves. Athletes were awarded medals based on skill proficiency. That evening BWP hosted a supper/tubing party for all athletes and their families. Families were able to take part in special door prizes and a 50/50 draw. It was a great evening to have fun and do some socializing!
Sunday everyone awoke to a beautiful morning of blue sunny skies but crisp air with chilling temperatures. Despite the freezing temperatures of -37 degrees Celsius, all athletes were anxious to hit the slopes for the inspection run. Shortly thereafter, BWP had a special treat for everyone. As a tribute to the Winter Olympic games in Sochi, all athletes stood to both national anthems while watching two skiers descend the hill carrying and waving the Canadian and American flags! It was an awesome moment! Soon after, our enthusiastic athletes continued to brave the cold temperatures as they took to the course for the U14 Kombi race.
Congratulations to all of the WAR skiers! You really performed well and had some great results! Congratulations to the U10 girls who swept the podium this year: Serena Kauffmann-Paul (gold), Jewel Paskaruk (silver) and Jocelyn Jekat (bronze). Well done!
Thank-you to the coaches who were in attendance, Coach Destiny, Coach Natasha and Coach John and for their endurance during the bitter cold in setting up the courses. A huge thank-you also to all the parents who volunteered their time during the race and were there to cheer on our racers at the bottom of the course, with cow bells and all!
Thank-you Bottineau Winter Park for hosting such a terrific weekend! Everyone is looking forward again to this wonderful weekend next year!
